"Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon" — watch with English subtitles, new
This longing creates a vacuum, and into that vacuum steps the catalyst.
Have you watched the new subtitled version? Let me know in the comments if you finally understood the “Prem vs. Prem” twist!
Sanjana (Kareena Kapoor) is a spirited young woman whose mother is eager to marry her off to a wealthy NRI named Prem Kumar. When a young man named Prem (Hrithik Roshan) arrives, the family assumes he is the suitor and welcomes him with open arms. Sanjana and this Prem (who is actually Prem Kishen, an employee of the real suitor) fall deeply in love.
For nearly two decades, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (translated: I am a Lover of Prem) was considered a "marmite" film—you either loved its over-the-top 90s-style melodrama or hated its confusing plot. Directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya (famous for Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!), the film was a box-office surprise, but found a second life as a guilty pleasure.
The song "Chali Aana" is a tearjerker. The new subtitles translate the lyrics with poetic sensitivity:
