The Codex is a collection/completion system. Every time you obtain a new item (Character, Dice, Board, Title, Emoticon, or Artifact), it is registered. Completing sets grants permanent stat bonuses (e.g., increased starting funds, dice control, toll bonuses) and exclusive rewards like gems, gold, and rare items.
