qsound_hle.zip is a device set (a supporting BIOS-like file) required by MAME to play audio for many Capcom games, particularly those on the CPS2 (Capcom Play System 2) hardware. 🕹️ Purpose and Function
If you are building a MAME library, you will need this file to run the heavy hitters of the mid-90s, including: Mame Qsound-hle.zip
- QSound-HLE (qsound-hle.zip): Good for casual play. Works on low-end PCs (Raspberry Pi, handhelds). 99% of users will never notice the difference.
- QSound LLE (qsound.zip): Required for speedruns or competitive play where frame-perfect audio cues matter. Requires a powerful multi-core CPU.
- MAME Native Audio: If you see no error about QSound, but audio is missing, the game might be using standard Yamaha FM synthesis (e.g., Final Fight). QSound is specific to later Capcom titles.
- Open your MAME configuration or INI file. This is often found in
mame.iniwithin your MAME directory. - Look for settings related to HLE, audio, or specifically QSound if available.
