  1. The Bait: A user posts a link in a forum (often a gaming or anime forum) titled "Cool new character art" or "Hidden level in Creepypasta game."
  2. The Lull: The link leads to a holding page or a Flash animation. For three to five seconds, the screen is blank, or it shows a pixelated, low-resolution image of a bedroom or a dark hallway. The sound is silent, or filled with faint static.
  3. The Trigger: Just as the user leans in to look at the dark image, the screen flashes white. The Jeff Killer image explodes onto the screen. Simultaneously, a compressed MP3 file plays a blood-curdling scream—often a distorted sample of a child or a Wilhelm scream stretched to breaking.
