The game doesn’t give you much guidance, so remember the physical controls: Sand through grits: 80, 120, 180, 220
Part 3: The Mechanical Mind (Tool Competence)
A hunk is not helpless. When the garbage disposal jams or the car makes a clunking noise, the "Hunks Workshop Guide" demands you know the basics.
- Sand through grits: 80, 120, 180, 220. Do not skip grits.
- Raise the grain: Wipe with distilled water. Let dry. Sand again at 220.
- The Finish: Danish oil (easy) or epoxy resin (hard). For a workbench hunk, use boiled linseed oil and wax. For a table, use a wiping varnish.
- The Trick: Apply finish with a red scotch-brite pad to work it into the deep grain of a burl.
- Weight: Minimum 300 lbs. Build a base from 4x4s and plywood, filled with sand.
- Height: Lower than standard (32 inches vs 36 inches). You need leverage to push planes and grinders.
- Vises: A front vise (Record or Yost) plus a tail vise. Add a "deadman" (a sliding support leg) to hold long hunks horizontally.
- The Floor: Anti-fatigue mats are mandatory. Dropping a hunk on concrete is a tragedy. Dropping it on your foot is a catastrophe (wear steel toes).
