2. Architectural Overview

The Conax ecosystem operates on a client-server model involving the Head-End (operator side) and the Set-Top Box (STB) or Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) on the client side.

  • Man-in-the-Middle (MITM): The software intercepts ECMs, forwards them to the card, captures the returned control word, and then redistributes that control word to other clients.
  • Key Derivation: More sophisticated (and rarer) software tries to mathematically reverse-engineer the master keys from the card, which is extremely difficult due to Conax’s security design.
