BlueStacks on macOS Catalina — compatibility, installation, and alternatives

macOS Catalina (10.15) introduced major architecture and security changes that affect app compatibility—most notably the removal of 32‑bit app support and tighter kernel/extensions rules. That has important implications for running Android emulators like BlueStacks on Catalina.

  1. "Unidentified Developer" Warning: Because BlueStacks is downloaded outside the Apple App Store, Gatekeeper on Catalina will initially block the installation. Users must navigate to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and click "Open Anyway."
  2. System Extension Blocking: During the setup, Catalina will prompt the user that a system extension was blocked. The user must allow this in the Security & Privacy pane under the "General" tab to allow BlueStacks to run virtualization processes.
  3. Input Monitoring: On Catalina, BlueStacks requests permission for "Input Monitoring" to allow keyboard mapping (using a keyboard to control touch-screen games). This must be enabled in the "Privacy" tab for the mouse and keyboard to function correctly inside games.

⚠️ Critical Note – Catalina Compatibility

BlueStacks does NOT officially support macOS Catalina or later due to Apple dropping 32-bit app support and kernel extensions.
The last compatible BlueStacks version (BlueStacks 4) was 32-bit and won’t run on Catalina.
BlueStacks 5 (64-bit) also does not work on Intel Macs running Catalina. bluestacks mac catalina

  4. Inside Windows, download and install BlueStacks.
  5. Run BlueStacks in the VM.

Older Releases: If you encounter issues with the latest BlueStacks 4 build, version 4.240.5 is often cited by community members as a stable legacy version for Intel Mac systems. Minimum System Requirements for Catalina 50GB+ disk). Inside Windows
